What is one legal issue or trend you’re keeping a close eye on this year?

The law surrounding cryptocurrency as it relates to estates is evolving rapidly. There are logistical issues related to transferring such assets and important tax issues to consider as well as privacy concerns. It is an exciting intersection of practice areas right now as more of our clients become comfortable with cryptocurrency.

What skills do you think are most crucial for new attorneys entering the field today?

While not new, the ability to form a personal connection with clients remains a key skill. To effectively put together an estate plan we have to earn clients’ trust and confidence. This is accomplished through authentic communication, providing quality work product and smart, practical solutions to each family’s unique set of challenges.

What’s one misconception people often have about your area of law?

Over the years I have heard that trust and estate work must be boring. Nothing could be further from the truth! I have been practicing for 25 years, and no two days are the same. I have been lucky to work with fantastic clients with interesting and challenging projects. Plus, I help clients to define their legacies! What could be more exciting?

How does the Rochester community influence your work or professional philosophy?

There is no better place to live and work than in the greater Rochester community. Our community’s rich history of working toward inclusivity for all is very inspiring. I am proud to work with longstanding organizations that continue to do so much good in our community such as the YWCA and Heritage Christian Services.

What’s your ideal way to spend a weekend in the Finger Lakes or Western New York?

If it’s summertime, during the day I want to be on a boat in Canandaigua Lake, visiting with friends and family. In the evening, dinner at one of the great restaurants in Canandaigua would be ideal! The next day, a stop at New York Kitchen to take a cooking class (and sample the wine) followed by a concert at CMAC would make the weekend complete!
