Edward P. Hourihan, Jr.
Managing Member – Rochester Office, Bond, Schoeneck & King, PLLC
Years in current role: 15
What was the most significant challenge your organization faced in 2024, and how did you address it?
2024 was a banner year for the firm’s Rochester office. Our biggest challenge was keeping up with and integrating numerous new talent into the Rochester office. We were very fortunate to have the capable and significant support from the firm’s Management Committee in navigating the onboarding of numerous new attorneys and staff while maintaining productivity and keeping our eyes on our economic goals and strategic plan. Looking back on 2024, we met the challenge very nicely.
What trends or innovations in your industry do you anticipate having the biggest impact in 2025?
Obviously, AI will continue to have a significant impact on how we practice law. There are no real sea changes in the legal industry, although many prognosticators warn of them. The practice of law continues to be largely, if not exclusively, dependent on interpersonal relationships. The “counselor” part of attorney and counselor at law continues to be of paramount importance in the attorney-client relationship.
What role do you see Rochester playing in your organization’s growth over the next few years?
The Rochester office is expanding to 56 attorneys in the next month. The office opened with five lawyers in 2006. This growth across all practice areas has driven revenue, cross-selling and new work. The Rochester office continues to look for new opportunities for smart growth.
What community initiatives or partnerships are you most excited about engaging with this year?
Our partner, Gail Norris, is chairing the Memorial Art Gallery Board this year. We are a title sponsor on the Memorial Art Gallery’s new contemporary art initiative and “Celebrating the Art of Our Time.” Our attorneys and staff are also engaged in Board service at numerous nonprofit organizations throughout the community and participate in many community activities.
How do you balance fostering innovation while managing day-to-day business operations?
This is not an either-or scenario. We welcome and embrace innovation, and our clients do as well. However, the nuts and bolts of the legal practice still require our attention to current requirements of the practice, and we strike the right balance.
