Lori Van DusenCEO, Founder, LVW Advisors
Years in current role: 11
What has been your organization’s biggest success over the past year?
In a period of time where every business leader is struggling to find talent, we have brought on some exceptional people. These include very experienced operational and administrative staff and key advisory talent. Our latest hire is a very accomplished young woman who moved her family to Rochester from the San Diego area to join our team of investment professionals.
What advice would you give somebody just starting out in your industry?
Seek out people and a culture where you will be mentored and can grow beyond your comfort zone(s). Culture is this amorphous word, but it really means to seek out a place where your values and those of the organization align. Do not move into a position for money or promises around money.
What is one personal goal you have for the next year?
I have completed a book after two years of writing that I hope to release in the near future. It is a collection of personal stories and experiences (some of which are not very pretty but are illustrative). The purpose of the project is to share life lessons with people such as: success and failure live side by side; it is never too late to rebuild or start over; sometimes our own worst enemy is the limits we set on ourselves vs. the external obstacles and inequities; and understand and stay true to one’s own individual values and beliefs.
