Colleen Matteson

President Rochester, Bank of America

Years in current role: 11

What has been your organization’s biggest success over the past year?

Through Responsible Growth, we deliver for our teammates, clients, communities and shareholders and help address society’s biggest challenges. One example is our work to advance racial equality and economic opportunity. This work is fundamental to how we run our company, support our teammates and deliver for our clients and our communities. It spans the company from our $15 billion commitment to affordable homeownership to our $1.25 billion to advance racial equality and economic opportunity; from our ongoing work to advance small businesses through $2 billion invested with CDFIs to our $2 billion Equality Progress Sustainability Bonds, of which proceeds are designed to advance racial and gender equality, economic opportunity and environmental sustainability.

What advice would you give somebody just starting out in your industry?

Starting your career is an exciting time filled with opportunities and often intimidating. You don’t have to know exactly what you want to do early in your career. Keep an open mind and take time to learn about various positions within a company and where your skills and experience may fit best into the overall company strategy. Be self-aware, be honest with yourself and take time to know your strengths and weaknesses. Find areas you excel in and areas to grow. The more self-aware you become, the more growth and opportunity you will see. Life is too short to be unhappy. You spend a majority of your time at work, try to make sure it is with an organization and in a role you enjoy. Find a mentor, having mentors throughout your life is critical to success both personally and professionally.

What are your favorite things about Rochester?

I am proud to be a Rochesterian and feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to work and raise a family in such a special city. From our world-renowned attractions, historic museums, arts and culture, to our internationally recognized festivals and cuisine. Rochester is home to America’s most iconic companies and trailblazers. Most of all what makes our city extraordinary are the people. Our community is made up of families, friends, neighbors, educators, community leaders, nonprofit organizations, small to mid-sized companies, all of whom make up the fabric of our beautiful, amazing city. I look forward to continuing to collaborate with key stakeholders in the community to build upon the tremendous work started to create cohesion and real and lasting change in Rochester.
