Food donations urgently needed at Brighton Food Cupboard

The Brighton Food Cupboard is seeking food donations as the number of those in need continues to grow.

Since Jewish Family Services opened the food cupboard in 2010, requests have continued to increase, from 100 households per month in 2010 to over 500 in 2022.

Demand for food assistance has increased 20 percent in the past month. The Brighton Food Cupboard typically serves 100 households a week and is now up to more than 120 per week.

While the need has increased, there has been a decrease in donations and supplies, the agency said.

“People are struggling on fixed incomes to make ends meet,” said Dee Schwartz, chief program officer of aging, essential and inclusion services. “It’s expensive right now to put food on the table for your family.”

Jewish Family Services is launching its Hunger Action Campaign in response. Individuals and organizations can sign-up to collect and donate food or participate through the agency’s online donation option.
