Work has begun on what will be a three-year project to upgrade six bridges and rehabilitate the pavement of Route 390 between Lexington Avenue and West Ridge Road in Greece and Gates.

The $18 million New York State Department of Transportation project will utilize traffic crossovers throughout much of the 2022 and 2023 construction seasons. That means a reduction in lanes for northbound and southbound traffic, a process that is expected to begin in May.

Work will include:

» An upgraded riding surface between Lexington Avenue and Ridge Road to provide motorists with smoother and safer travel;

» Bridges spanning Lexington Avenue, Weiland Road and Latona Road designed with epoxy coated steel reinforcement bars to prevent corrosion;

» The use of Higher Performance Internal Cure Concrete for the bridge decks, which reduces cracking and permeability, and extends the life of the bridge;

» New high-strength concrete guiderails, curb ramps, and traffic signals that will bolster driver and pedestrian safety.

“To ensure the long-term resiliency of our infrastructure, we must deliver on innovative, thoughtful, and efficient solutions our communities deserve — and that is exactly what we are doing with this project,” Marie Therese Dominguez, state DOT Commissioner, said in a news release.

There will be periodic road and ramp closures throughout the duration of the project, including to the northbound Route 390 onramp at Ridgeway Avenue and the southbound 390 onramp at Lexington Avenue.

The latest work on 390 comes five months after completion of the $172 million remake of the Interstate 390/Interstate 490/Route 31 interchange. That significant project took five years to complete and include repair and/or replacement of seven bridges, construction of new ramps and a new I-390 southbound flyover.

“Route 390 is an essential freeway connecting our residents and families to local resources and meaningful opportunities,” Assemblymember Demond Meeks said. “It is important that we continue to maintain safety and reliability along these roads. As a state representative serving both the town of Gates and the city of Rochester, I am proud to see improvements being made that continue to support the people of Greater Rochester and the welfare of our community.”
