Alstom awarded $90 million contract; signal systems to be engineered in Rochester
Alstom Signaling Inc. and its partner, Barletta Heavy Division, have signed a contract to partner on a Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority subway project. The contract is worth $90.5 million, company officials said.
Alstom‘s centers of excellence for transit signaling in Rochester and Bari, Italy, will provide engineering, product development and project management support for the project, while its manufacturing sites in Missouri and Hornell, Steuben County, will manufacture the products.
Alstom—which employs nearly 400 people at its Henrietta projects and engineering facility—will provide MBTA’s Orange and Red line signal upgrades, comprising the latest generation of digital audio frequency technology, and the replacement of the existing relay-based train control with Alstom’s integrated vital processor interlocking, the latest generation of microprocessor-based train control interlocking.
The company also will provide its new Model 5F wayside switch machines and LED signal upgrades and new, fully wired central instrument houses at certain stations.
“Along with our partner, Barletta, we are honored to have been selected by MBTA to contribute to the increase in capacity and reliability of Boston’s Red and Orange lines,” said Jerome Wallut, Alstom’s senior vice president in North America. “We are very pleased to be part of this project and to support MBTA in their efforts to deliver the transit system that MBTA customers and the Greater Boston community expect.”
Alstom is a French multinational company operating worldwide in rail transport markets, active in the fields of passenger transportation, signaling and locomotives. In November 2017, Alstom announced plans to cut 80 jobs in Rochester as a result of its decision to transfer its hardware equipment manufacturing from its Rochester facility to other U.S. sites. The company had employed 460 people here at the time.
