Monroe County sales tax revenue shows robust increase

Listen to this article

Sales tax collection in Monroe County grew by 3.8 percent, or $8.4 million, in the first half of 2016, compared to the first half of 2015—one of the largest increases in county collections statewide over this period, according to a report from the Comptroller’s Office released on Aug. 4.Total local tax collections statewide increased 1.7 percent for the same period year over year, according to the report. The report also shows that the impact of declining gas prices and the resulting declines in motor fuels sales tax collections over the past two years has disproportionately affected upstate counties. Compared with the first half of 2014, motor fuels sales tax collections in the first half of 2016 in all Rochester area counties declined by more than 40 percent; in Livingston and Orleans counties, the decline exceeded 45 percent.
