The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) rose 1.1 percent nationwide from April 2015 to April 2016, according to the May 17 report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.  The percent change in three of four of the nation’s regions clustered just below that figure, but the index jumped 1.8 percent in the West. The BLS report cites large year-over-year increases in the national index for motor vehicle insurance (6 percent),  tobacco (3.7 percent), shelter (3.2 percent), and medical care (3.0 percent), alongside declines in used cars and trucks (-1.5 percent) and household furnishings and operations (-1.2 percent). Beer prices in April were 2.7 percent higher than in April 2015—the largest 12-month increase in over two years.
