Fifteen car accidents occurred each day in Monroe County from 2010 to 2014, and Reconnect Rochester Inc. has created an interactive map showing where the incidents happened.

Using data from the state Department of Transportation, Reconnect Rochester worked with Livadas Consulting to create the map, which allows the public to plot crash data on a Google Inc. map and filter the results using a variety of categories, including the type of crash, date range, vehicle count and town the accident took place in.

The map includes data for the more than 22,000 accidents that resulted in injuries or fatalities during the four-year period.

“Our streets and highways are intended to carry people safety to their destination,” Reconnect Rochester president Mike Governale said in a statement. “Life-altering car crashes are occurring every day in our area. It’s an epidemic that looms larger in Rochester than violent crime, yet we allow careless driving habits and poorly designed roads to go largely ignored.”

Citing data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Reconnect Rochester notes the cost of medical care and productivity losses associated with injuries from car accidents exceeded $80 billion nationwide in 2010.
