NON-PROFIT REPORT: Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School

Listen to this article

Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School is an ecumenical and multiracial institution with ties to the American Baptist Churches USA. Its history in Rochester dates to 1850, when it began as an offshoot of a seminary founded with Colgate University in Hamilton, Madison County.

The women and men enrolled at CRCDS come from many Christian denominations and prepare for ordained or lay ministry in three degree programs: master of arts, master of divinity and doctor of ministry. Because of an affiliation between the school and St. Bernard’s School of Theology and Ministry, a Roman Catholic institution, students may be cross-registered.

CRCDS is a historically progressive seminary, and its most famous faculty member, Walter Rauschenbusch (1861-1918), founded the social gospel movement in the late 19th century. In addition, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was a 1951 graduate of Crozer Theological Seminary, a predecessor institution in Pennsylvania that became part of CRCDS in 1970.

The divinity school’s Black Church Studies Program, Program for the Study of Women and Gender in Church and Society and Academic Lectureship Committee provide frequent learning opportunities for students, leaders of faith communities and the public. Common themes for workshops, lectureships and other events include the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender experience within the church, social justice and the promotion of interfaith dialogue.

The B. Thomas Golisano Hope Lodge Hospitality House was opened in 2010 on the CRCDS campus in partnership with the University of Rochester Medical Center and American Cancer Society. Operated by the society, Hope Lodge provides free lodging to cancer patients and a low-cost option to organ transplant patients receiving care at local hospitals. The CRCDS campus also houses a teaching and research facility of Ithaca College’s physical therapy department.

The divinity school’s new president is the Rev. Marvin McMickle, who was selected last May and began fulltime work in January. McMickle had been senior pastor of Antioch Baptist Church in Cleveland since 1987 and before that served churches in New York and New Jersey. He holds doctoral degrees in ministry and philosophy and has taught at several colleges and universities, most extensively at Ashland Theological Seminary in Ohio. McMickle also is a former president of the school board in Shaker Heights, Ohio.

CRCDS has 35 employees. The campus is at 1100 S. Goodman St., and its website is www.crcds.edu.
