Rochester law firms now have a service other cities have had for years: a company devoted solely to the legal profession that performs specialized photocopying with attention to detail and confidentiality.
DocuLegal opened its doors on the fifth floor of the Alliance Building in October.
John and Timothy Holland, brothers who grew up in the area, run the business, bringing to bear experience working for two of the top imaging companies in the world. John Holland used to work as a sales manager in the legal services division of Ikon Document Services in New York City. Now he handles sales and marketing for DocuLegal LLC.
His older brother Timothy, a former systems analyst at Xerox Corp., is head of operations. They have two employees and expect to bring on a third next month.
Every aspect of the business is designed to serve the requirements of law offices, especially those involved in litigation. That means DocuLegal staff is ready to meet court-ordered deadlines with precise copies when their customers need them.
“There hasn’t been a service that’s really tailored to their needs,” John Holland says.
With DocuLegal’s somewhat out-of-the-way location, the Hollands can promise the contents of personnel files or other ticklish originals will remain confidential. If a customer needs a type of copying they do not offer, a staffer will escort the originals to an associated vendor and watch while the duplication is completed.
The staff checks each page of copy after jobs are done–a chore law-firm employees must perform otherwise. And DocuLegal workers track projects on a white board, assuring customers that they will only take on jobs that can be completed in the time promised.
Photocopying rates run from 5 cents to 25 cents a page, and the business operates 24 hours a day as necessary. (Both brothers wear beepers in case of emergencies.)
So far DocuLegal’s most difficult mission was duplicating two boxes of papers–some 8,000 copies–that the customer needed five hours later. Many of the originals were on double-sided pages and had to be laid on the copier by hand.
DocuLegal made the deadline, with an hour to spare. “The client was extremely happy,” John Holland says.
Goals for the business are modest at this point.
The Hollands have so far persuaded 10 of the city’s top 25 law firms to try them out, and hope to introduce the other 15 to DocuLegal by year’s end.
They also would like to increase their staff to eight to 10 by the end of the year.
Says Timothy Holland: “We feel confident that, in certain situations, nobody can compare.”
