United Way awards $1.06M to strengthen 26 nonprofits across region
United Way of Greater Rochester and the Finger Lakes has awarded $1.06 million to boost capacity-building efforts at 26 nonprofit organizations through its Creating Synergy for a Stronger Future Grant.
The investment will support 28 projects aimed at strengthening organizational health, improving long-term sustainability and enhancing overall impact.
According to United Way, interest in the program underscores the significant need among nonprofits across the region: 135 agencies submitted 223 project applications totaling nearly $9 million—nine times the available funding.
“The grant applications were solutions to real organizational and community challenges,” said Robert De Leon, senior director of community impact and interim chief impact officer. “Every request represented a nonprofit working to strengthen its foundation so it can better serve those who depend on its programs. While we’re proud to invest over $1 million, the demand shows us how much more support is needed.”
Projects funded through the program focus on areas such as technology and systems upgrades, leadership and board development, organizational development, strategic planning, and merger or affiliation initiatives. These investments are intended to help nonprofits operate more efficiently and expand their ability to deliver services across the six-county region — Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Wayne, and Wyoming counties.
The grant was created to help nonprofits build internal capacity, increase program effectiveness, and ultimately strengthen the broader community.
“When we strengthen our nonprofit partners, we strengthen our entire community,” De Leon said. “Every dollar we put into organizational capacity means better services, more efficient operations, and ultimately, more people helped.”
