The city of Rochester is asking experienced and “visionary” developers to submit purchase and redevelopment proposals for Adlai E. Stevenson School No. 29.
Located at 88 Kirkland Road in the city’s southwest quadrant, the 79,000-square-foot school was built in 1964 on 3.45 acres. There are 37 classrooms, an auditorium, gymnasium, two kitchens, a library and on-site parking.
City officials envision a variety of adaptive reuse proposals that “meet diverse neighborhood needs.” That would include arts and cultural spaces, small business hubs, recreation facilities, community services, or mixed-use concepts that blend residential and commercial opportunities while preserving the building’s historic character.
“To build a city that works for every resident, we need creative solutions, from new housing and businesses to innovative services and community spaces,” Mayor Malik Evans said in a news release. “Historic buildings like this one are platforms for new ideas to spark growth, drive momentum and inspire our neighborhoods.”
The property is on the edge of the Bull’s Head neighborhood, which is undergoing a major transformation.
The city assumed management of School No. 29 in May as part of the Rochester City School District’s 2024-2029 Strategic Plan.
The city website has details and application forms. A virtual informational session will be held at 2 p.m. on Sept. 3 (the website has a link for registration). Proposals are due by 4 p.m. on Oct. 17.
Back in June, the city issued a Request for Proposals to redevelop Henry Lomb School No. 20 at 54 Oakman St.
