LaBella Associates employs 70 engineers at their State Street office, making them the largest engineering employer in Rochester, according to survey responses for RBJ’s annual Engineering Firms list. LaBella’s revenue reached $166.89 million in 2023, with projects including the Fairport-Minerva Stream and State Street work.

Erdman Anthony follows with 40 engineers, then Passero Associates with 37. These three firms make up 147 of the region’s licensed engineers. Combined, they employ 800 staff members across their offices.

The Engineering Firms list includes data from 16 firms operating in Rochester, with founding dates ranging from 1927 to 1996. MRB Group, founded in 1927, stands as the oldest firm on the list, while APD Engineering and IBC Engineering began operations in 1996.

The numbers indicate trends in project types. Many firms split work between sectors — commercial, government, industrial, and institutional projects. M/E Engineering reports 50% of work comes from institutional projects, while Re:Build Optimation Technology shows 85% from industrial work.

Revenue figures vary among firms that disclosed numbers. After LaBella’s $166.89 million, Colliers Engineering reports $42.36 million, and Re:Build Optimation lists $38.2 million in revenue.

The data reveals 1,989 total employees work at these 16 firms in Rochester, with technical support staff accounting for 959 positions. Each firm maintains between 1-3 local offices, creating a network of 22 engineering locations across the region.
