A delegation of local elected officials and organizations announced their support this week for a series of recommendations passed by the Child Poverty Reduction Advisory Council (CPRAC) that would reduce child poverty in New York by 50% by 2031.
Among the CPRAC’s recommendations are:
• Increase the Empire State Child Credit to $1,500 for children from birth to age 17.
• Create a NYS Housing Voucher Program for income-eligible households.
• Increase public assistance basic allowance Reforms to public assistance eligibility rules to increase accessibility, and
• Expand state food benefits for families with children.
“The Child Poverty Reduction Advisory Council’s recommendations present an unprecedented opportunity to correct a historic injustice,” said Aqua Porter, executive director of the Rochester-Monroe Anti-Poverty Initiative. “While we have seen a decline in child poverty across the state and here in Rochester, the rates remain stubbornly high and threaten the future of our community’s most vulnerable members.”
Added Larry Marx, CEO of The Children’s Agenda, “The single best evidence-based way to eliminate child poverty is to supplement family income through policies like expanded tax credits. We have an opportunity to do just that in the state’s upcoming budget, and when it comes to children, there is fierce urgency to act now.”
