A fourth-generation mechanical and roofing contractor that has been serving the Western New York area since 1948, Leo J. Roth Corporation is focused on providing an integrated approach to the services its customers need; whether it is a building management system to monitor and control energy costs or a new roof.
What inspired the founder(s) to start the company?
Leo Roth simply put wanted a better life for him and his family. He was a skilled craftsman in slate and copper roofing and was known in the East Ave neighborhoods. Leo believed that it was time to open his own business and with the help of his wife, Geniveve, and his four children, Bob, Don, Joan and Jim a little over 75 years ago he did just that.
What were some of the biggest challenges the business faced in its early years? How has the company evolved over time?
We started out as a Roofing and Sheet Metal Company and evolved into a Mechanical and Roofing company. At the time it was a natural progression as the equipment utilized to fabricate metal for roofing can be deployed to make ductwork. The real challenge came as the company’s mechanical division grew and the expanded labor force needed to have the ability to schedule with a variety of other contractors to deliver a system that met all the specifications. We were not simply installing a roof. We successfully “bridged the gap” and added a service division, a plumbing division and a building automation division all to meet the needs of our expanding customer base. We found that in so many cases customers wanted an integrated solution for their needs. They wanted one source that would provide the total system; one person to call if they needed help. Leo J Roth’s vision over 76 years ago is still our foundation; and sure, he is smiling thinking that his great granddaughter is now leading the company he started in a garage on Clifford Ave in 1948.
How many family members are involved in the business, and what roles do they play?
Kaitlin Hildebrandt, President. Thomas Roth, Executive Vice President
What are the long-term goals for the company?
To continue to build on Leo’s vision for generations to come.
How do you envision the business adapting to future trends or challenges?
We will continue to innovate to match the needs of our customers, whether it is the ever-evolving energy arena or restoring a beautiful slate roof for the next 100 years. We are very comfortable changing and innovating to meet the needs of our customers. Leo never got out of sixth grade, his son went to Aquinas, his grandson college and his great granddaughter is a licensed plumber and graduate of the Simon School. We will continue to adapt, we have to, we have great great grandchildren in the wings.
What role does the company play in the local community? Are there community initiatives or causes that the firm supports?
We support and continue to support several community groups. Nativity Prep, Our Lady of Mercy, Volunteers of America, Genessee Country Village and Museum, Volunteers of America to name a few.
