Based in Fairport, Casa Larga Vineyards has been making award-winning wines and hosting events for 50 years.
What inspired the founder(s) to start the company?
Casa Larga was inspired by Andrew and Ann Colaruotolo’s passion for winemaking and desire to honor their Italian heritage. After emigrating from Italy, Andrew planted his first vines in 1974, aiming to recreate the vineyard lifestyle of his childhood in Italy. The love for sharing wine with family and friends sparked the idea to establish a winery that blends Old World traditions with the rich terroir of the Finger Lakes. Mr. and Mrs. C started a legacy that was then passed on to their children.
What were some of the biggest challenges the business faced in its early years? How has the company evolved over time?
In the early years, Casa Larga faced skepticism toward New York wines, as many doubted quality wine could come from a cold climate. Finding vineyard workers and the right microclimate were also major challenges. Over time, as local support grew and the industry expanded, Casa Larga evolved into a respected icon in the community, known for its family legacy, charitable involvement, and as a cherished venue for weddings and events.
How many family members are involved in the business, and what roles do they play?
Casa Larga Vineyards is run by Mr. and Mrs. C’s three children, each with an active role: Andrea Colaruotolo O’Neill is the Director of Marketing, Mary Jo Colaruotolo Telesca is the Director of Accounting and IT, and John Colaruotolo is the Director of Winemaking. Several grandchildren also contribute, continuing the family’s winemaking legacy.
What are the long-term goals for the company?
Casa Larga aims to keep creating fresh experiences for visitors by enhancing its wedding and special event venues, expanding food options in the new café, introducing new wines, and making the space more family friendly. The winery also seeks to improve its popular Patio Parties, offering even more enjoyable and diverse options for all guests.
How do you envision the business adapting to future trends or challenges?
Casa Larga plans to adapt to future trends by expanding its online presence, introducing new products, and staying closely connected to customer feedback. This commitment ensures the winery evolves with changing preferences and remains at the forefront of the industry.
What role does the company play in the local community? Are there community initiatives or causes that the firm supports?
Casa Larga proudly supports local charities, focusing on faith-based causes, children, and those in need. Each Patio Party raises food donations for the local food pantry, and winter items are collected at the Ice Wine Festival. The winery also donates wine and event tickets, and frequently hosts charity galas at its venue, strengthening its commitment to the community.
