Li-Cycle’s construction ‘pause’ leads to layoff of 102 by MasTec

Li-Cycle’s construction ‘pause’ leads to layoff of 102 by MasTec
MasTec Industrial, a national infrastructure construction company based in Florida, is closing its Rochester office and laying off all 102 employees that were working on the $485 million Li-Cycle Rochester Hub.
MasTec filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification with the New York State Department of Labor. The notice was posted Monday on the Department of Labor website.
Employees were notified last week that layoffs will begin Friday and be finalized within two weeks.
MasTec was hired by Li-Cycle as a contractor for development and construction at the Hub site on adjacent to Eastman Business Park in Greece.

MasTec specializes in the engineering, installation and maintenance of communications, energy and utility infrastructure, including cell towers, fiber and pipelines. The company’s corporate headquarters is located in Coral Gables, Fla.
Whether MasTec workers will be brought back upon resumption of activity at the Li-Cycle facility isn’t known, a MasTec spokesperson said.
Li-Cycle’s Rochester Hub was being built on 41 acres along McLaughlin Road. Construction was halted last Monday due to rising costs. Engineering and procurement for the project are largely complete, Li-Cycle said, “with the current focus being on construction activities on site.
“The company expects the aggregate cost for the current scope of the project to exceed its previously disclosed guidance,” Li-Cycle’s statement said. “In light of these developments, the board of directors has decided to pause construction work on the Rochester Hub, pending a review of the project, including an evaluation of the go-forward phasing of its scope and budget, including construction strategy.”
Additional updates are expected when the Canadian-based company releases its third quarter financial report on Nov. 13. Li-Cycle executives, in an open letter to the community, said they remain committed to the project and Rochester.
