Community Education and Recruitment Manager, Rochester Victory Alliance; Board President, Rochester Rainbow Union

Years in current role: 12 years; 1 year

What do you enjoy most about your position in your company and/or your role in the community?

I love that my work (both paid and volunteer) immerses me within our rich and diverse local community, whether it’s at a health fair, Rochester Pride, or a local festival. I get to meet all types of people and make an impact within our community.

What is one thing you hope to accomplish before the end of the year?

I want to bring together a summit of all our local LGBTQ+ organizations so we can synergistically plan together over the next year to reach even greater heights. We have a rich ecosystem of community organizations; we can achieve even more if we all get in the same room.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve had to overcome in your career?

As with many people in community work, I need to slow down sometimes and remember to put my own oxygen mask on first.

What are your favorite things about the Rochester area?

I love Rochester’s rich history of LGBTQ+ history and activism. I started living completely out when I was an undergraduate at the University of Rochester, and it has helped nurture my queer identity. From the ImageOut Film Festival to Rochester Pride to its history of activism, Rochester has a rich LGBTQ+ culture.

What do you see as the biggest challenges facing Rochester?

We haven’t fully addressed the history of injustices in Rochester. For example, Rochester, while a city of many opportunities, has a long history of redlining. Many areas of Rochester still feel these effects, from food deserts to lack of generational wealth. We need to see community-level investment (and I use that term broadly) to help correct for these past practices.
