The Democrat and Chronicle will outsource printing of the newspaper to a New Jersey facility this spring, meaning 108 full- and -part-time employees in Rochester will lose their jobs.

Gannett Co. Inc. will shut down printing operations in Canal Ponds Business Park in April. The D&C has been printed at the facility since 1997.

The company has initiated layoff notifications for 57 full-time and 51 part-time employees, according to a story DemocratandChronicle.com.

Print subscriptions continue to decline while digital subscriptions have risen past 25,000, the story said.

“As our business becomes increasingly digital and subscription-focused, newspaper printing partnerships have become standard,” a company spokesperson said in an email. “We are making strategic decisions to ensure the future of local journalism and continue outstanding service to the community.”

The Canal Ponds press prints Gannett papers from seven other New York communities as well: Binghamton, Canandaigua, Corning, Elmira, Hornell, Ithaca and Utica. They also will be printed at a facility Rockaway, N.J. Other non-Gannett newspapers also contract with the facility for printing services, meaning they must find a new home.

After $54 million losses in the second and third quarters of 2022, Gannett continues to implement of cost-saving measures, from layoffs to the sale of property. Gannett recently underwent three rounds of company-wide layoffs, in August, October and December. The company also sold printing facilities in Milwaukee and Phoenix last year.
