McDougall Communications has again been recognized for public relations campaign excellence by the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA).

For the third time in five years, McDougall and the Centre for Ocular Research & Education (CORE) received the PRSA Silver Anvil Award.

They were honored for a campaign that raised awareness among medical professionals and consumers about the increases in dry eye symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic and the resources available to alleviate discomfort.

The 18-month program drew widespread attention to a new condition, mask-associated dry eye (MADE). The campaign led to more than 2,500 mainstream media news reports on six continents, as well as coverage by ophthalmic industry journalists. Eye practitioners rapidly adopted CORE’s guidance.

“It’s a privilege to partner with CORE on some of the timeliest issues in ocular health, helping eye care practitioners and the public gain access to reliable, accurate, and relevant information that affects vision,” Mike McDougall, president of McDougall Communications, said in a news release.

A CORE-bylined story written to complement the program was awarded a Bronze Anvil Award of Commendation.

The Anvil Awards, founded in 1944, have been presented to organizations that successfully address challenging issues with exemplary skill, creativity and resourcefulness.

McDougall Communications work with CORE was recognized with a Silver Anvil in 2018 for the launch of CORE’s new brand and a Bronze Anvil of Commendation in 2019 for digital innovation. In 2021, the firm’s won a pair of Silver Anvils as well as an Award of Excellence for spearheading worldwide crisis response to COVID-19 misinformation about contact lens wear.

CORE was established in 1988 at the University of Waterloo’s School of Optometry & Vision Science in the Canadian province of Ontario.

Other 2022 Anvil honorees include St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Delta Airlines, UPS and Royal Caribbean Group.
