Peace Corps Director Josephine “Jody” Olsen will be the keynote speaker at Rochester Institute of Technology‘s commencement weekend.
Olsen will speak at the university’s academic convocation, 10 a.m. on May 8 in the Gordon Field House and Activities Center.
After a career spent working for the Peace Corps and other organizations concerned with global education, exchange and service, Olsen was appointed director of the corps in March 2018.

Regarding her selection as commencement speaker, RIT President David C. Munson said, “I’m sure that her message to our graduates will add measurably to what our students have been hearing throughout their RIT experience — that engagement as concerned, global citizens is vital.”
Some 106 RIT graduates have participated in the Peace Corps since its inception during the Kennedy Administration. There are 11 RIT alumni in the program now, according to the university.
Olsen was a Peace Corps volunteer in Tunisia from 1966 to 1968. She later worked for the agency in regional leadership positions in North Africa, Near East, Asia and the country of Togo. From 2009 until her return to the Peace Corps as director, Olsen was a visiting professor at the University of Maryland-Baltimore School of Social Work and Director of the University’s Center for Global Education Initiatives.
