Warner School’s new dean steps down
Less than a year into his five-year appointment as dean of University of Rochester‘s Warner School of Education, Anand Marri is stepping down.
In a daily newsletter to the UR community, a notice about Marri said he will do research through the summer of 2020 and then relocate to be closer to family. He began working at UR in January 2019.
Brian Brent, senior associate dean, will be the acting dean starting today while a national search is conducted for Marri’s replacement, the newsletter said.
Marri was born in Hyderabad, India, but moved to Queens at age 12 when his family emigrated to follow his father, who was working and earning a graduate degree in the United States. The younger Marri went on to earn degrees at Bowdoin College, Stanford University and the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Before coming to UR, he taught at Columbia University and worked for the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
Marri had described his goals for the Warner School as obtaining a national ranking for Warner, increasing its work on educational equity for students of all means, increasing resources and creating a more distributive method for decision making. The university’s announcement said the school had made significant progress in these areas in recent years.
