Apple producers in Wayne County are readying their farm stands, cideries and other apple-oriented businesses for the annual Wayne County Apple Tasting Tour in October.
The tour lasts the entire month of October, hosted by 12 Wayne County businesses. Special events are also scheduled for Oct. 11-14, which includes Columbus Day, to provide visitors a chance to taste the wide variety of apples grown in Wayne County as well as other apple products created by farm businesses.
Wayne County is home to about one-fifth of all the apple trees in New York State, helping the Empire State achieve second place in the country for apple production. The 22-year-old tasting tour has won statewide recognition, including the Ag promotion Award earlier this year from the New York Agricultural Society, and the Tourism Excellence Cultural Heritage Award from the state tourism trade association in 2017.
People who take the tour can compete for prizes by having participating farm businesses stamp a passport they carry from stop to stop. Along the way, they can pick apples, drink sweet cider, sample hard cider and spirits, walk through corn mazes and take a hay ride, all during peak foliage season. Several of the stops have meals and baked goods available, too.
The participating farms include two century farms – Lagoner Farms (1909) and Orbaker’s Fruit Farm (1889) and several others that have been growing apples for generations. One four-generation farm, Youngman Orchard Farm Market in Sodus, is participating in the apple tour for the first time.
Apple tourists can download a map of the various locations online, or pick up one at participating businesses.
