Girl Scouts of Western New York will celebrate its sixth annual STEM-A-Palooza event this weekend in which 300 Girl Scouts will explore hands-on STEM activities.
With the support of 150 volunteer women working in STEM, Girl Scouts will learn computer coding, disassemble the inner workings of a computer, explore the freezing properties of liquid nitrogen, mix the right chemicals for perfect slime and elephant toothpaste, learn about the math skills needed for a career in banking, orange suturing to learn about closing wounds and more.
The Girl Scout Research Institute conducted a study on girls in the STEM field called Generation STEM: What Girls Say about Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Researchers found that Girl Scouts who participated in female-focused STEM programs heightened their skills in problem-solving, critical thinking and became better leaders by earning better grades, earning more scholarships and following more lucrative career paths.
STEM-A-Palooza runs from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Al Sigl Center on Saturday, April 6.
