The Harris Corp. has tapped Dana Mehnert to serve as president of the company’s Rochester-based communications systems business.
Mehnert will succeed Chris Young, former executive vice president at Exelis Inc. and president of Exelis Geospatial Systems. Harris acquired Exelis in 2015, at which point Young was named president of communications systems, which is a $1.9 billion piece of Harris’s portfolio. Based in Melbourne, Fla., Harris employs 17,000 people, including about 3,400 in Rochester.
“Chris has done an outstanding job leading this important business. I want to thank him for his efforts and wish him well in his retirement,” said president and CEO William Brown, in a statement.
Mehnert has worked for Harris for 33 years, previously serving as the company’s president of RF communications for 10 years. There, he expanded the company’s role in tactical communications, defense and public safety. He will officially take up his new position on Sunday, Sept. 30.
“Dana’s extensive experience and demonstrated success expanding our tactical and public safety communication business make him the ideal leader as we continue to grow our Communication Systems business,” Brown said. “Dana and his team will focus on executing the business’ growth strategy and enhancing our competitive position through continued investments in innovative technologies and improvements in operational efficiency.”
