As of July 31, residents of upstate metropolitan areas have contributed more than $4.4 million to presidential candidates in this year’s elections cycle, according to the most recent Federal Election Commission data. Aggregated by ZIP code, the FEC figures show that contributors in Buffalo’s 142xx were upstate’s most generous, donating a total of $833,315 to 2016 presidential candidates. But that amount was dwarfed by the $27.8 million given by donors residing in ZIP codes 100xx—belonging to the borough of Manhattan—which accounts for over 25 percent of total state contributions of $101.9 million, according to the FEC. The nationwide total of some $983 million includes contributions from all sources, including individuals, PACs, political parties and the candidates themselves.
