Citizens Bank is moving its Rochester headquarters to Sagamore on East, the bank announced Tuesday.
Citizens, a division of RBS Citizens N.A., has purchased 18,000 square feet of space at Sagamore, at 130 East Ave., and next month will move 60 employees from offices on the corner of East Main Street and Clinton Avenue.
“Citizens Bank’s multi-million dollar investment in the move furthers the bank’s goal of continued economic development in downtown Rochester,” the bank’s Rochester District President Charles Vita said.
The new Rochester headquarters will serve all banking lines of business, company officials said. They include commercial, government and international banking, commercial real estate finance, underwriting, retail banking and residential mortgage, officials said.
Citizens’ two downtown branches, at 40 Franklin St. and 45 Exchange St., will remain, the bank said.
The four-story building at 235 E. Main St. in which the bank’s current headquarters are located was purchased by Christa Development Corp. and an undisclosed group of investors, officials said.
“The move of our local corporate headquarters paves the way for the creative use of the East Main Street building and will ensure its part in the entire revitalization effort at Main and Clinton,” Vita said.
Christa and the investment group plan to work with local officials on efforts to revitalize downtown, particularly with the proposed demolition of Midtown Plaza, officials said.
Citizens is a division of RBS Citizens N.A., a subsidiary of Providence, Rhode Island-based Citizens Financial Group Inc., a $159 billion commercial bank holding company. The bank employs some 350 in Monroe County.
