On Sept. 13, the Levine Center to End Hate will hold “Brave Spaces: Rochester’s Summit to End Hate,” a first-of-its-kind online event featuring keynote speaker Eric Ward, a senior fellow at the Southern Poverty Law Center.
Ward, a nationally recognized expert on the relationship between authoritarian movements, hate violence and preserving inclusive democracy, serves as executive director of the Western States Center and has transformed the organization into a national hub for innovative responses to white nationalism, anti-Semitism and structural inequality.
Summit participants will be able to choose from a dozen different workshops, led by local thought leaders and community members. Topics include “Redlining, Racist Policy and Resistance in Rochester, New York,” “An Introduction to Restorative Practices,” “Youth Activism” and more.
The afternoon closes with Roland Williams, St. Louis Rams Super Bowl champion, East High School graduate and Levine Center steering committee member. As a philanthropist, Roland is committed to helping teens in his hometown overcome barriers and maximize their potential through his groundbreaking Champion Academy Extreme Mentoring & Empowerment Initiative, which is accomplishing academic and social-emotional outcomes with more than 1,000 middle and high school students.

The Levine Center to End Hate seeks to unite the greater Rochester community in overcoming hate through education, dialogue and positive action. Partnering with local agencies throughout greater Rochester, the Levine Center amplifies efforts to foster tolerance and understanding across the community through programming that explores differences, develops skills for dialogue, and activates cooperative and collaborative responses to hate in all its forms. The Levine Center is an initiative of the Jewish Federation of Greater Rochester.
