Ross is a co-leader of the Regional Financial Institutions Team and represents financial institutions and other commercial clients in complex business disputes in state and federal courts. These matters often involve multijurisdictional or international implications, including contract, regulatory compliance, lender liability, distribution agreements, partnership disputes, insurance, reinsurance, white-collar matters, and premises liability claims, including Labor Law Section 200, 240(1) and 241(6) claims. Ross also advises clients on regulatory implications of engaging in commercial transactions, including international transactions. His work includes the defense of consumer financial services class action litigation, regulatory matters, mediations, arbitrations, and internal investigations.
Ross advises organizations of all types on financial and banking developments within the Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act (MRTA), including cultivators and processors, retailers, and distributors. He is a frequent speaker on Cannabis topics. Ross also advises and defends social media platforms and technology companies on cutting edge issues including online privacy and the scope of publisher immunity pursuant to Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act and products liability claims alleging the platform algorithm is a defective product.

Jim’s specific focus is on the legislative, policy and compliance issues involved in international investment, trade and business development. Through his international business and federal government relations practice, he assists clients with transnational compliance matters (Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, Export Administration Regulations (EAR), International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), export licensing and involvement with various sanctions regimes) and works frequently with the presidential administration and Capitol Hill. He spent more than a decade as a senior staff member for several U.S. senators, including three years as chief of staff to then-Senate Leader Bob Dole (R-KS), for whom he also handled trade and telecommunications issues.
