In an effort to make employment opportunities more appealing to a still-small pool of potential job applicants, Partyman Catering of Avon has reimagined the hiring process.

Traditional listings for positions such as servers, kitchen help and event setup weren’t drawing enough interest. With so many small businesses looking to hire, applicants have been able to be more discerning on where they choose to work.

So Joe Yantachka, owner of Partyman Catering, decided to make positions more attractive by creating what the company calls the Partyman Hero. It’s essentially an all-encompassing role with no predetermined hours or duties. There also is no defined number of potential hero positions.

“We’re focusing on schedules and what you’d want to do here,” said Meg Lindsay, the company’s marketing director. “It’s a really tough job market from an employer’s perspective. A lot of businesses in the hospitality industry are having trouble filling roles.”

The hope at Partyman Catering: to lure job-seekers that may not normally consider applying to work at a catering company. They believe that by expanding the pool of potential applicants, they’ll have a better chance to land the right person.

“We had not been receiving a lot of applications for traditional positions,” Lindsay said. “But with the Partyman Hero, it doesn’t have to be the typical catering position. If you want, you can cut carrots, fold napkins, make hand-written signs, help with our gardens or provide vehicle maintenance. It allows someone to follow their passion.”

So far, so good, Lindsay said.

“We’re getting a diversified pool of applicants that are a company fit, a culture fit and align with company values,” she said.

Founded in 2000, Partyman Catering currently has 77 seasonal employees and caters weddings, graduations, corporate outings and a variety of other events primarily in Monroe, Ontario and Livingston counties.
