Retired retailer Paul Linehan and his wife, Judy Wilmot Linehan, chairwoman at Nazareth College of Rochester, have donated $2 million toward scholarships and a planned expansion of space for instruction of teachers in math and science, Nazareth College president Daan Braveman said.
The gift is the second-largest in the school’s history, he said Thursday.
Some funds will benefit the Paul J. Linehan Endowed Scholarship, established by the couple in 2006 as an emergency fund for students who suddenly are unable to afford tuition payments.
The gift also will support the college’s plans for an expansion of up to 80,000 square feet for math-science labs and classrooms, Braveman said. The school is determining whether to renovate existing space or build new. The enhanced math-science areas also will benefit programs in health and human services, he added.
“This is very significant for us,” Braveman said.
The Linehans have a long history associated with the college, where Judy Linehan graduated in 1976, Braveman said. A lounge is named in honor of the Linehan family. Paul Linehan owned more than a dozen stores in the Northeast, including three Rochester area Linehan Hallmark stores.
Her father, James P. Wilmot, was a board member at Nazareth College and major benefactor.
Nazareth College’s largest gift came from Paychex Inc. founder and chairman Thomas Golisano six years ago for renovations at the Golisano Academic Center.
