Fairport celebrates the heritage of the beer can

beer-blur-close-up-250465Fairport is celebrating this weekend, honoring its heritage as the birthplace of the beer can.

The former American Can Company, which had facilities in Fairport, brought the beer can into existence in 1934. That’s the reason behind Fairport’s Beer Can Appreciation Weekend, which starts on Friday and runs through Sunday with special events.

Two breweries – Triphammer Beirwerks and Fairport Brewing Company – will be releasing brews in new cans during the weekend. Skip’s Meat Market will be having a two-for-one special Saturday on beer brats made with a Fairport-made ale. A  number of bars and restaurants will be featuring special canned beers. And there’s at least one non-alcoholic event, as Redbird Market will be offering peanut butter tasting on Saturday, in a nod to National Peanut Butter Day.

A complete listing of events is available online at the Fairport Partnership for a Better Community.

Shuttles, sponsored by the partnership and Fairport Perinton Merchants Association, will be available Friday evening and Saturday afternoon and evening, making stops at the breweries and other locations in between.
