Urban League to implement two new programs

urban-league-logoiThe Urban League of Rochester N.Y. Inc. will receive a $2.5 million infusion of funds from the U.S. Department of Labor to implement two programs.

Project Steps to Success is a re-entry program designed to serve 125 young adults aged 18 to 24 who have been involved in the justice system. Project B.E.A.M. (Build, Educate, Advance and Motivate) also is a re-entry program that will serve 188 adults aged 25 and older who have been formerly incarcerated.

The goal of each program is to help individuals who were involved in the justice system to successfully re-enter society by addressing their personal and professional barriers ad help them attain the employment skills required to enter in-demand occupations.

Project Steps to Success will build on the Urban League’s YouthBuild program, which provides academic assistance, job training, employment placement and supportive services to disadvantaged young adults.

Project B.E.A.M. will bolster the organization’s current workforce program that is funded by the KeyBank Foundation. The program provides individuals aged 18 to 30 with job training and employment services.

“The Urban League of Rochester is dedicated to serving the most vulnerable in our community,” said Urban league President and CEO William Clark in a statement. “These re-entry programs will strengthen the organization’s ability to help individuals successfully return to our community and start them on a path towards economic and personal prosperity.”

The Urban League was founded in 1965 as an affiliate of the National Urban League. The organization’s mission is to enable African Americans, Latinos, the poor and other disadvantaged to secure economic self-reliance, parity and power and civil rights.
