The Wegmans School of Pharmacy at St. John Fisher college will launch its first undergraduate program this fall with the development of its new Bachelor of Science degree in pharmaceutical studies.
The program will serve students who wish to earn a bachelor’s while simultaneously pursuing the doctor of pharmacy degree. The program was approved by the state Education Department in July.
“Many students enter the Pharm.D. program before earning a bachelor’s degree, and we’re proud to be able to further introduce them to the field of pharmacy by offering this credential,” said Christine Birnie, dean of the school. “Through the program, students will also have the opportunity to engage in the college’s core curriculum, interacting with faculty and coursework they might not otherwise be able to experience.”
The program will begin with a foundation of coursework in math and the basic sciences. Students will then progress to advanced coursework in the pharmaceutical sciences and obtain an introduction to the field of pharmacy as a profession. They will also take courses in economics, statistics, and communications.
Graduates of the program will be prepared to pursue careers as pharmaceutical scientists, in pharmaceutical sales and marketing, or in other health-related fields. They also will be well-positioned for entry into graduate programs, including masters or doctoral degrees in the pharmaceutical sciences or pharmacy, as well as advanced degrees in business administration.
The School of Pharmacy is accredited by the Accreditation County for Pharmacy Education.
