Wegmans again a Great Place to Work; three other firms recognized

It might be time for Fortune and Great Place to Work to change the name of their annual Best Workplaces in Retail list.

Something like, Best Workplaces in Retail, other than Wegmans; that’s because Wegmans Food Markets continues to maintain a stranglehold on the top spot.

The Rochester-based grocer tops the Fortune Best Workplaces in Retail rankings for the seventh consecutive year. The lists were released Wednesday. Wegmans was the only local firm on the Retail list.

Three other local businesses earned spots on other lists. Dixon Schwabl + Co. is ranked No. 18 on the Fortune Best Workplaces in Advertising & Marketing, The Pike Cos. landed 25th on the Construction list for small- and medium-size firms) and The Bonadio Group is No. 50 on the Professional Services list for small and medium firms.

For Dixon Schwabl, this is the second time on the Advertising & Marketing list, and the 16th time the company has landed on a Great Place to Work list.

The Bonadio Group has been on the Professional Services list five years in a row while this is the first year The Pike Cos. earned recognition.

Great Place to Work annual rankings are based on an evaluation of employee surveys.

“Great Place to Work certification isn’t something that comes easily — it takes ongoing dedication to the employee experience,” Sarah Lewis-Kulin, vice president of global recognition at Great Place to Work, said in a news release. “It’s the only official recognition determined by employees’ real-time reports of their company culture.”

Wegmans is No. 3 on Best Companies to Work For list, once again

For the 23rd year in a row, Wegmans Food Markets has made the Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For list, placing third in 2020.

Fortune magazine and the Great Place to Work firm announced the list Tuesday. Wegmans finished behind Hilton, the McLean, Va.–based chain of 389 hotels, and Ultimate Software, based in Weston, Fla.

“We are so grateful for our dedicated employees who have made us a part of this list for the past 23 years,” said President and CEO Colleen Wegman. “Our people make shopping and working at Wegmans a truly special experience every day. We celebrate and thank them for all they do to earn this incredible honor.”

Wegmans said it will serve cake — or Clementine tangerines for those who don’t eat cake — in all of its stores Saturday at 11 a.m. to celebrate.

The Best Companies to Work For list is composed after surveying employees of nominated companies. That amounted to more than 650,000 employees surveyed this year.

In 2019, Wegmans placed 3rd,  as it did in four other years as well. The 104-year-old company has been on the list every year since it was first composed in 1998, scoring in the top 10 for a majority of those years, and usually besting other grocery stores, such as Publix and Whole Foods, who make the list as well.

Wegmans was No. 1 in 2005.

In 2019, the company made several national ranking lists, including those for best places to work for women, diversity, working parents, and millennials. It scored no. 1 for best places in retail.

Wegmans opened its 101st store in Brooklyn in October, and is hiring now for additional stores in Harrison (near White Plains) and West Cary, N.C., and Tysons Corner, Va. The Harrison store is due to open in June, while the others will open later in 2020.
