Rochester’s finance sector employs nearly 22,000 people at hundreds of institutions, from banks and credit unions to accounting and wealth management firms. The area’s largest credit union was founded in 1920 by George Eastman, and now has $6.2 billion in total assets and serves 330,000 members. The area’s largest employee benefit administrator was founded in the early 1970s by Rochester’s first billionaire, B. Thomas Golisano. Golisano took $3,000, one employee and 40 clients and built a firm that employs more than 13,000 nationwide. Rochester’s finance sector has a long history of philanthropy; since the late 1990s, Golisano’s philanthropy totals more than $270 million.
