What if Kodak went dark?
Numerous communities across the country have suffered the loss of a dominant employer. What if Rochester lost Kodak? In this special section published Oct. 10, 2003, the Rochester Business Journal posed the question, exploring how it might happen and what it would mean for the community. Some local officials did not want to consider that possibility. “I think that’s beyond the pale,” one said. “I cannot imagine that future. It’s too hard.” At the time, Kodak employed 21,000 people locally, down from a peak of more than 60,000 in the early 1980s. Today, Kodak employs roughly 7,000 people here and shortly after midnight on Thursday, Jan. 19, 2012, it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Now you can read the entire “Kodak: What If” special section online.
