Black Button Distilling came on the scene in 2014, opening its distillery/tasting room at 85 Railroad St. — a testament to the city’s interest in craft cocktails and small-batch spirits.
As Rochester’s first “grain-to-glass” distillery, the space’s original industrial architecture and fixtures give it an authentic vibe. And Black Button is indeed authentically local: As a New York state-licensed farm distillery, the ingredients for its whiskey, gin and vodka are more than 90 percent New York-sourced.
Visitors can sip cocktails while overlooking the full distillery production area, as well as take tours of the facility. As a unique event space, the facility can host parties of anywhere from six to 50 people. Black Button also holds classes in cocktail-making for those wishing to try their hand at the craft.
Jason Barrett, owner and head distiller, founded Black Button in 2012; the name pays homage to his family’s button factory, where Barrett himself worked as a young man. He didn’t feel pulled to fulfill family tradition and decided he wanted to make whiskey instead, and Rochester is fortunate he did.
