Development of a Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, Inc., at the corner of East Main and Alexander streets has been discontinued and the property is back on the market.
Liberty Restaurants Holdings, headquartered in Bellerose (Nassau County), had planned to build a 2,124-square-foot Popeyes restaurant with a drive-thru at 770 East Main St.
But because of property constraints, other commercial driveways within that block of East Main Street and the location of a traffic signal at the intersection with Alexander Street, there was no way to create a safe entrance/exit, said Erik Frisch, the city’s deputy commissioner for neighborhood and business development.
There already is traffic entering and exiting immediately next door from Guys & Dolls Beauty Salon, and from Wendy’s restaurant at 744 East Main.
“We had hoped to see it happen but during the review process we just couldn’t make it work,” Frisch said. “It came down to a traffic safety conversation.”
Frisch said the city has recommended to Liberty Restaurants Holdings other sites on the city’s east side and he is hopeful the developer may find one appealing.
There are four Popeyes in the metro area already: On Lake Avenue in Rochester, on East Ridge Road in Irondequoit, off Jefferson Road in Henrietta and on Panorama Trail in Penfield.
The developer has been aggressively expanding throughout Upstate New York. Bids for a Popeyes in Canandaigua went out in May.
