The Veterans Outreach Center will receive nearly $2 million to complete renovation and expansion of Richards House, a housing complex for homeless male veterans, under a proposal now before the Monroe County Legislature.

County Executive Adam Bello and various lawmakers announced support for using part of the $144 million allotted to Monroe County from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).

Richards House is located on Cypress Street in the city of Rochester and has a capacity for 38 homeless veterans. Approval of the funding would increase capacity to 66.

Richards House residents have access to VOA services, including healthcare, job programs and nutritional assistance.

“The sacrifices our servicemen and women endure grant us our freedom,” Bello said in a news release. “It is our duty to serve them when they are in need. This proposal would ensure that veterans get the care they need when they are their most vulnerable.”

Said Congressman Joe Morelle: “When we send the men and women of our armed forces into harm’s way, we make a promise to take care of them when they come home.”
