City to provide roof repair grants to 80 homeowners

City of Rochester home owner/occupants may be eligible to receive grants to repair or replace roofs.

The grants of $35,000 for single-family homes and $45,000 for a two-family home area available to owner/occupants earning no more than 80 percent of the Area Median Income. The income calculation will be based on all revenues sources for all occupants 18 and older of the home.

The financial assistance is for roofing repair or replacement, as well as related components such as gutters and downspouts, chimney repairs, roof flashing, soffits and venting. Detached garage roofs are not eligible.

To be eligible, the home owner must occupy the home and also maintain residency for five years following completion of repairs.

“The City’s Owner-Occupant Roofing Program is a critical resource for our lower-income households as heating costs are expected to significantly increase this winter,” Mayor Malik D. Evans. “It can be a lifeline for those facing the costly roof replacements and repairs. The city remains committed to strengthening neighborhoods by improving the equitable distribution of assistance and giving working families the support they need.”

Preapplications may be submitted at any Neighborhood Service Center (NSC) through Nov. 18. The NSCs also have detailed program information.

A lottery system will be used to select 20 program participants from each NSC. The drawing will be at 2 p.m. on Nov. 30. Selected property owners than will be notified in writing to complete the program application.

Once approved for a grant, homeowners will choose a contractor from a list of those approved for the work by the city.
