Elizabeth Thorley

Founder and CEO, Thorley Wealth Management Inc.

Years in current role: 35

What has been your organization’s biggest success over the past year?

Thorley Wealth Management is celebrating its 10th anniversary at the end of this year. I began my career as a financial advisor in 1987, but this anniversary is a personal milestone for me. It’s deeply gratifying to know our business focuses on helping clients realize their most important financial goals.

What are your expectations for the next 6-12 months?

Continuing to grow our firm — we expect to add another staff member to support our consistent growth rate. It’s important that the Thorley Wealth Management team continues to deliver the high level of service that clients have come to expect. We are fortunate to have a consistent source of referral business, and we take pride in providing new and existing clients with a highly personalized service.

What advice would you give somebody just starting out in your industry?

Basic knowledge in the fields of finance and economics is necessary for anyone starting in the industry. My advice would be to expand on this and develop an appreciation of Behavioral Finance, which tries to explain when and why people deviate from rational behavior and rational expectations. Simply stated, it helps us understand the role emotions play in the financial markets and when making financial decisions.

What is one personal goal you have for the next year?

I am someone that enjoys learning and so one of my goals over the next year is to learn a new hobby — something that isn’t financially oriented.

What are your favorite things about Rochester?

Rochester Festivals — It seems there is always something to enjoy most weekends especially during the summer and fall.

The Finger Lakes and all the activities surrounding them — boating, kayaking, wine tours, skiing, and hiking. We are so fortunate to have this natural treasure in our back yard!
