Years in current role: 1.5

What has been your organization’s biggest success over the past year?

Landsman has experienced the same employee hiring and retention challenges that most, if not all companies across our country have endured this past year. Especially in the affordable housing business, there are specific complexities involved in what we do because of NY State regulations that can be very complicated. We focus on training people at all levels which provides opportunities for growth in their position on a personal basis, as well as promotions within the company. It is positive for the individual and it is positive for our company since we know exactly who/what we are getting when a person moves into a new position.

What advice would you give somebody just starting out in your industry?

I believe it is the same for every industry. Understand it is a marathon, not a sprint and appreciate the resources and people along the way. I wouldn’t be in this position today if it weren’t for the many high-quality, professional people I’ve been fortunate to meet and work with through the years. You can learn something from every person you encounter no matter who they are or their position, if you are open to it. Most importantly, I learned from many “spontaneous” conversations — sitting at lunch with my peers from across the country at a conference, talking with Bob Wegman in the hallway of the office when he asked me “Kurt, what do you think?” and seeing the way that Elliot Landsman made a point of making every single person feel special, no matter who or what the circumstances.

What are your favorite things about Rochester?

Rochester offers so many things that contribute to our quality of life. I love the four seasons. If you appreciate the beauty that each one offers you can experience different activities throughout the year. Rochester is also affordable with great culture (Jazz Festival, Geva, Eastman School, etc.), talent from our local colleges, access to the Finger Lakes, Adirondack Mountains, lack of traffic and easy commute all contribute to a high quality of life. It is a great place to raise a family while having access to high quality jobs and a variety of resources.
