Tom Wahl’s, Hobby Lobby coming to Greece

Tom Wahl’s, Hobby Lobby coming to Greece

Two retail locations in the town of Greece left vacant by the departure of longtime tenants will soon have new tenants.

Tom Wahl’s, which has been serving hamburgers and a variety of other food in the area since 1955, is renovating the building formerly owned and occupied by Carmine’s Family Restaurant on Maiden Lane, while Hobby Lobby is moving into the former Ashley HomeStore off Fetzner Road near West Ridge Road.

“We have a great climate for business right now,” Greece Supervisor Bill Reilich said.

Webster-based Tom Wahl’s currently has six restaurants; in Avon, Brighton, Bushnell’s Basin, Canandaigua, Fairport and Newark.

“We don’t really have a presence on the west side, and we think a lot of people on the west side love Tom Wahl’s,” company president Jon Gonzalez said Monday afternoon.

The homegrown chain will soon start remodeling 671 Maiden Lane, a building that first housed Kenny Rogers Roasters before Carmine’s took over in 1999. Carmine’s closed in July, four months after the death of owner and co-founder Mauro Petrella. Tom Wahl’s will be adding on to the existing structure.

“It will take a little time to transform it into how we want it to look,” Gonzalez said.

The loose timeframe is to be open in the spring, he said.

Just two miles away, Hobby Lobby will be adding another 10,000 square feet to the building that was home to Ashley Homestore since 2006. The national arts and crafts chain already has three stores in the Rochester area; in Henrietta, Webster and Victor.

Ashley HomeStore closed in September because it was unable to extend its lease, according to the owner, The Wellsville Group, which has headquarters in the Cattaraugus County hamlet of Weston Mills.
