Law Office Joseph S. Damelio
Years in current role:34
What do you enjoy most about your role?
I truly enjoy advocating for the client, representing an individual at trial, and playing my part in safeguarding a person’s Constitutional rights. It is a tremendous responsibility which causes the lawyer to constantly challenge themselves.
What has been the biggest challenge you’ve dealt with over the past year?
The biggest challenge over the past year has been participating in very serious matters with the courts by virtual internet communications. The courts have done a great job trying to protect the rights of everyone involved, but it seems that some of the advocacy and adversarial process has been temporarily softened with virtual appearances.
What advice would you give law students who are graduating this year?
The advice that I would give to law students graduating this year is simple. Law students today are light years ahead of lawyers who have been in the profession for some years as far as knowledge and use of computer technology. That makes it real easy to become trapped in the sterile environment of the “email.” So, take the time to pick up the phone, or have the client come in to the office for a face-to-face conversation with no buffers. This is the best environment to use the tools you learned in law school.
What are you most looking forward to doing as COVID restrictions ease?
Two words: Yankee Stadium.
