Syracuse mall closes; Rochester malls and more to close by Thursday evening

Generic retail sales rackWith many retail businesses in flux due to the COVID-19 outbreak, Destiny USA, a major Syracuse mall, has announced it will close business at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Rochester area malls owned by Wilmorite were still operating but on a reduced schedule. The schedule is 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

This affects Eastview Mall in Victor, Ontario County; Marketplace Mall in Henrietta; and The Mall at Greece Ridge in Greece. But it won’t last long.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday ordered that the indoor portions of all malls in the state be closed by 8 p.m. Thursday. Stores with outside entrances can stay open.

Before Cuomo’s order, a statement from Wilmorite said some tenant businesses had decided to remain open and needed mall access for customers to find them. Some others have already closed, so Wilmorite is recommending shoppers call ahead to the stores they wish to visit before setting out.

Cuomo also ordered closed “all places of public amusement, whether indoors or outdoors, including but not limited to, locations with amusement rides, carnivals, amusement parks, water parks, aquariums, zoos, arcades, fairs, children’s play centers, funplexes, theme parks, bowling alleys, family and children’s attractions” effective Thursday at 8 p.m. This did not include parks. Movie theaters, gyms, restaurants and bars closed Monday.
