‘God Help us!’

The Louis S. Wolk Rochester Jewish Community Center’s CenterStage Theatre presents the political comedy “God Help Us!

Ed Asner, legendary actor and eight-time Emmy Award-winner, stars in this production as God. Samuel Warren Joseph and Phil Proctor wrote this role for Asner, and the play looks at the absurdity of political arguments from both sides. Asner portrays a hysterical deity who is upset with American politics and what the world has done to his creation.

Rick Staropoli and Jamie Tyrrell play a former romantic couple with differing political views. God summons these two to resolve a heavily conflicted world who try to convince him not to reboot the world as we know it.

This play is Asner’s return to Rochester after bringing his solo play “A Man and His Prostate” to the area in June. Asner can be seen co-starring in the Netflix comedy/drama series “Dead to Me” opposite Linda Cardellini and Christina Applegate. He also recurs on the television series “Cobra Kai” starring Ralph Maccio, and portrays Dr. Wasserman on the CBC sitcom “Michael: Tuesdays & Thursdays.”

Other recent credits include a recurring role on the CBS series “The Good Wife” starring Julianna Margulies, “Criminal Minds,” “Hawaii 5-0” and “Mom.”

Asner is best known for his comedic and dramatic talent as the gruff yet soft-hearted journalist Lou Grant on the series “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” and later on the newspaper-set drama “Lou Grant.” That role earned him five Emmy Awards and three Golden Globe Awards. He received two more Emmy and Golden Globes for the mini-series “Rich Man, Poor Man” and “Roots.”

“God Help Us!” runs Sept. 19 at 7 p.m., Sept. 21 at 8 p.m. and Sept. 22 at 2 p.m. jcccenterstage.org
