Rochester Cyclocross

The Rochester Cyclocross event is this weekend, and it is bringing in athletes from all over the world.

Cyclocross is a hybrid between road cycling and mountain biking. Circuits are usually one-and-a-half to two miles long and feature a variety of surfaces from pavement to grass to sand to gravel to dirt. Riders are faced with many obstacles on each circuit and are often forced to dismount and carry their bicycles.

Now in its 12th season, this is the fourth year that Genesee Valley Park will host the exciting competition. Elite athletes will be coming to Rochester to compete from Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Switzerland and from around the United States.

“I like Rochester because it is so early in the season, everything feels fresh and new,” says Rebecca Fahringer of New Hampshire, who took two Top 10s at Rochester Cyclocross last year. “Because Rochester is early in the U.S. season and has a high international rating, it draws a lot of big names. Also, some Europeans are in the U.S. getting ready for the World Cups in the weeks after. So fans can see firsthand how racers are going after the off-season, and can see talents that may not usually race together go head-to-head.”

Fahringer and Kerry Werner of North Carolina will instruct a CX Tech Clinic on Friday, Sept. 6 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. for beginner and seasoned cyclocross riders.

“I think the clinic gives a little insight into the close-knitness of the community. Kerry Werner and I are two multi-time World Championship contenders, but we will be there learning the course with you,” adds Fahringer. “There will be laughs. The No. 1 key to (cyclo)cross…is a healthy sense of humor.”

Locally brewed beers from Rohrbach Brewing and delicious local fare from Neno’s Gourmet Mexican and Chef’s Catering will be on site on both days, Saturday, Sept. 7 and Sunday, Sept. 8. rochestercyclocross.com
